The story of the store begins with Shula and her personal story of healing and her desire to share the tools and resources that brought such healing to her life. In 1990, Shula began her healing journey of freedom from sexual abuse. Grateful to have 19 years of recovery, Shula is uniquely equipped to offer love and encouragement to those seeking sexual wholeness and sexual joy. Shula is one of those people who embrace healing for themselves and delight in offering healing to others. In her consistent desire to rid herself of sexual and emotional pain and learn how to experience pleasurable healthy sex, Shula has explored many educational and therapeutic resources.
After a frank conversation with her physical therapist about sex and back pain, her therapist recommended she try Liberator shapes to make lovemaking more comfortable and to reduce back pain flareups. Shula did try Liberator shapes and felt the significant benefit to life and relationship that sexual health can bring. Shula also worked with a gynecologist, urologist, sex therapist and relationship counselors to help her create the best sex life possible, and she learned that sensuous toys could be very beneficial and a valuable part of sexual health.
As an active participant in sexual abuse and codependency support groups, Shula was delighted to share and receive encouragement. But it took the power of the internet to realize her potential for fully sharing her encouragement strength and hope. Both her doctor and her therapist told her she was the poster child for sexual abuse recovery and she should write a book. Shula began writing her books From Survivor to Thriver-How to Have Heart Stopping Joy-Filled Sex That Makes You Want to Shout Hallelujah and Erotic Mystic-Musings on God and Sex and started her sensuous wife blog. Her quest for information on how to better enjoy healthy sex and learn frank information on technique and relational aspects of sex led her to many resources including themarriagebed.com. As much as she enjoyed learning about sex in such a frank and respectful way, Shula also found tremendous joy in mentoring and encouraging women who identified themselves as being sexually abused and were dealing with the fallout of that in their marriages. Shula knows from experience that experiencing sexual abuse or health issues do not have to mean the death of healthy sex. As she began to reach out and encourage others in her community, it was very common for her community to ask her to recommend toys, books and accessories that have helped her to experience healthy orgasmic sex despite a history of sexual abuse, back pain, hormone disorders, and pelvic floor dysfunction.
While Shula felt gratitude and joy for the opportunity to recommend products that have helped her, she saw the need for a store that offered the full range of products she wanted to recommend with the products presented in a way that honored the unique needs of those dealing with sexual abuse or sexual addiction issues: high quality products presented in a frank respectful informative way without imagery that might trigger a sexual abuse survivor or offend the sensibilities of somone choosing sobriety from sexual addiction.
The chance to pursue this opportunity came when Shula learned her job in corporate marketing was about to end when the division she worked for was about to be sold. She went to her online community told them that her job was about to end and wondering if this was the right time to build an online store, and asked them to pray for guidance. Within 24 hours, people started emailing her with product orders and within a week others in the community offered to join the team and offer their talents in graphic design, web development and customer care. The calling was clear! Sensuouswife.com is the result.
